Shannon Williamson

Christchurch based artist Shannon Williamson (b.1985) graduated from the University of Canterbury School of Fine arts in 2009 with a BFA(honours) majoring in Painting. Shannon was the recipient of the Ethel Susan Jones Travelling Scholarship in 2010, taking up the award in May 2011 to travel to SymbioticA Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, Perth, WA. 

Work of hers have been featured in both group and solo shows with in New Zealand, Including Uncanny Valley 2010, the fifth exhibition in the prestigious emerging artist series to be held at the Christchurch Art Gallery.

Shannon’s large scale watercolour and graphite works on paper explore a fine line between the beautiful and the grotesque. Often using anatomical reference and subject matter as a point of departure, her fleshy pallet and delicate pencil lines intricately examine the dual awkwardness and sensuality of the body.
